because they have more tree cavities. But
golden-winged warblers, right, are dependent on
young forestland for nesting and brood-raising.

But new forests can't be started until
those old trees come down.
Meeting Needs
The Game Commission started
making headway in 2013 by hiring six
forest technicians to augment the existing forestry staff's efforts to mark older
timber for commercial harvest.
An additional eight technicians will
be hired this year.
The forest techs basically pay their
way through the return on the commercial-timber sales they mark, Gustafson
noted.
Marketable timber will provide an
investable return - upward of 50 percent of costs - in conservation.
From 2002 to 2011, the agency
averaged annually about 2,280 acres in
regeneration cuts. Over the past three
years, it has averaged about 5,000 acres

in regeneration cuts.
The forest technicians have helped
make a difference.
Followed by controlled burns, timber
harvests provide the most economical
means to assail Penn's big, but troubled,
woods on a landscape level, Jones said.
"With around a dozen or so techs, we
can start to turn the tide," Jones emphasized. "It's the only way to tackle this
elephant, one bite at a time."
Using rule-of-thumb percentages,
Jones said a great mix of forestland
would go something like this: 20 percent young forest; 30 percent middleaged forest (21 to 80 years old); 30
percent older forest (80 to 100 years);
and 20 percent much-older forest (125
years or older).
"What matters most, though, is how
this woodland mixture appears on the
landscape," Jones noted. "Young forest
mixed among a forest's varied older
components typically is beneficial to
more wildlife."
Wildlife Habitat Management
Bureau Director Pete Sussenbach
pointed out that the agency's habitat
management crews will play an integral role in this ongoing initiative to
diversify stand age classes in forests
throughout the state.
In the past, he said, crews often
worked independent of forestry staff,
managing fields, hedgerows and shrublands.
"The agency now approaches things
differently, integrating efforts and coordinating whenever possible," explained
Sussenbach. "It's another way the
