Overhead Threat

URKEY HUNTERS are committed to being where
they need to be before their quarries leave the roost.
Often their treks take them along creek bottoms and across
mountain foothills, and passage through these places brings
them closer to decomposing ash trees.
In the spring woods, when so many trees are leafing
out, it isn't as easy to pick out an ash's barren branches
or see the dead space its loss to infestation has created
in the canopy. But ash trees represent a genuine threat
to everyone who visits low-lying wooded areas.
Pennsylvania's emerald ash borer infestation
probably started back in the 1990s, but it has impacted
ash almost everywhere in the Commonwealth. Our ash
have come up short in their defense against the beetle from
northern Asia. It's the way the borers kill a tree that is creating danger zones in our
woods. They infiltrate into the highest branches and work their way down the trunk.
Consequently, the higher branches become the first to dismember from the trunk. That
makes the threat harder to see.
Ash is a fast decomposing wood; the branches become soft, soak up humidity and
rain, then fall. Bad times to be around decomposing ash are in heavy humidity, rain or
whenever it's windy.
Although ash are more prone to dismember branch by branch, they can fall, trunk
and all. The deciding factor often is how long the tree has been dead. It would be great
if there was an ironclad guideline to follow. But there isn't.
One of the best ways to know whether you're getting into ash trees is to watch for bark
to be chiseled from the trunks of ash by pileated woodpeckers. It's almost impossible
to overlook. The trunk takes on an almost unnatural light-brown appearance. Another
indicator is piles of bark on the forest floor around the tree's trunk.
So, when you're out preseason scouting, or listening for gobblers, pay particular
attention to the trees you're walking by and the ones you're sitting up against to call.
The wetter - or windier - the morning air feels, the greater your risk is likely to be if
you're around ash.
Look for those signs of trouble: woodpecker-chiseled trunks, dead branches, bark
piles. Then steer clear of that ash. It's not a lot to do to ensure your safety. But you can't
be walking to your spot half asleep and pull it off.
Striving to be safest we can be afield is something we owe ourselves and our families.
No turkey is worth more than that.
