fall season, it was no secret either that
gobblers were being under-harvested.
Those toms, Wunz emphasized, were
expendable.
The Game Commission in 1967
announced the state's first spring turkey
season would take place in the spring
of 1968, and the agency worked hard
to garner support in the months that followed.
Through Game News articles, talks
at sportsmen's clubs and conversations
with hunters, the agency's biologists and
game wardens promoted the hunt, and
support grew.
The agency even offered hunting tips.
"First of all, calling gobblers is the
name of the game, so learn to use a turkey
call," Wunz advised in Game News. "After
locating a tom by listening to his gobbles,
sneak up within 200 or 300 yards of his
location. Then, take special care in selecting a good hiding spot.
"Now you are ready to call," he wrote.
"Wait until the gobbler approaches close
enough for a sure short - less than 40
yards is recommended."
As the inaugural season approached,
Wunz said a majority of hunters seemed
to support it.
"Most sportsmen praised this as
another progressive step in Game Commission policy to keep pace with the
growing demand for healthful outdoor
recreation by the fullest utilization of
our renewable wildlife resources," Wunz
wrote.
Pennsylvania's first spring gobbler
hunt started on a Monday and ended
Saturday, running May 6 to 11.
The Monday opener was employed to
reduce pressure on the resource.
And it got the job done.
In that first season, 50 percent more
hunters were afield on the hunt's Saturday
compared with the Monday opener.
Starting the new spring season a week
into May also provided insurance most
hens would be incubating their nests
and wouldn't be disturbed by hunters,
or mistakenly shot, explained Game
