Author Charlie Burchfield got this publicland gobbler by using old-school methods
practiced on many spring gobbler hunts.
Time seemed to pass slowly, but the
tom soon crested the rise in the field, out
of shotgun range, taking one cautious step
after another.
He was in full strut and his head was
as white as snow.
When he got within 30 yards and came
out of strut, I squeezed the trigger.
At that point, all I had learned over the
years came together.
Having an intimate knowledge of the
area where the bird roosted and how the
weather would affect him, set the stage for
sparse calling and lots of patience.
These are time-tested, old-school
techniques.
TURKEY TIPS
finally stopped, though water was dripping from the trees.
On a clear day, turkeys would have hit
the ground already, but not today. I knew
I'd need to be patient.
Then it happened.
Directly behind me and up the ridge, a
turkey pitched down from its roost. With
my head raised slightly and my eyes
straining to look up, I caught a glimpse
of a gobbler gliding overhead and to the
bottom end of the field.
As it disappeared beyond a small rise,
I knew it was time to call.
I sent out a few short yelps on my box
call, then put it away.
The bird remained out of sight and
didn't gobble.
I debated calling again, but resisted the
temptation to do so. Even after catching
a glimpse of the bird, I decided against
making more calls.

Location is important when setting up
on gobblers.
When a bird gobbles, try to set up about
75 yards away. Know what lies between
you and the gobbler. Take note of changes
in the habitat that occur from one season
to the next. Try to determine the bird's
easiest path to your location.
When changing location to set up
again, mask your movement using terrain
and vegetation.
When setting up, sit at the base of a tree
wider than your shoulders and keep out of
direct sunlight. If you shoot right handed,
position your left shoulder in the anticipated direction of an approaching bird.
When it comes to calling, I start off
softly. If the bird gobbles, gauge his
response.
Adjust the frequency and tone as the
bird reacts to your calling.
At this point, the tom has an exact fix
on your location. Often, you'll not need to
