A gobble boomed back.
"He's coming; he's definitely coming!"
Chris hissed.
The bird gobbled as he walked along
the bottom of the field, then suddenly
went quiet.
Ten minutes later, as Matt wondered
what had gone wrong, he heard the
big gobbler spitting and drumming as
he strutted along the back side of the
fencerow.
Instead of coming up the hill to Chris'
calls, the gobbler appeared like a ghost -
directly behind Matt.
The flintlock was on a set of cross
sticks, pointing toward the decoys in front
of Matt. It wouldn't be easy to move the
fowler's long barrel 180 degrees without
being seen by the bird.
Chris yelped on his mouth call, which
triggered the gobbler to sound off.
The bird strutted 5 feet behind Matt,
then to his left, and stopped.
Now the decoys had the gobbler's
attention, but Matt was silhouetted against
the open field in full view of the gobbler.
When Chris purred on his call, the bird
fired off again right in Matt's ear.

"I almost lost it when he blasted me
with that throaty gobble!" Matt said.
Filled with excitement, this feathered
bruiser strutted over to the jake decoy,
knocked it to the ground and stomped it.
The gobbler again looked in Matt's
direction as the fowler slowly eased into
alignment with the bird's colorful head.
The 10-yard shot didn't allow for a
wide pattern, but the 1½-ounce load of
No. 6 shot in front of 80 grains of black
powder hammered the big bird.
While the smoke covered up the
decoys and gobbler, and with the cell
tower in the background, Chris jumped
up.
"You got him," he chirped. "You
killed the Cell Tower Gobbler. We have
been after him for years with modern
shotguns and you flattened him with a
muzzleloader!"
Sometime later, after the wing bones
were crafted into turkey calls for Matt and
Chris, they enjoyed a fine meal thanks to
the 22-pound gobbler with a 9-inch beard
and inch-long spurs.
It was a fitting tribute to a great game
bird taken with flint and steel.
