elk in Elk Hunt Zone 11.
Elk guides and outfitters can help take
the guesswork out of decisions on where
to hunt, and provide lodging, meals, elk
retrieval.
It all comes down to personal preference, how much time you have and what
makes you most comfortable.
But guided and unguided hunters both
can benefit by knowing most elk are taken
in and around large grasslands, often managed meadows.
Prime times are usually one to two
hours after dawn and before sunset, when
elk are drawn to these fields to graze.
"Elk really stand out in these fields
and hunters, often setting up just inside
adjacent forest edges, take them when
they come into range," Banfield said.
"Sometimes it can be a real waiting game
that might include repositioning."
Banfield believes hunters who stay

afield through the morning and afternoon
only help their chances to take an elk.
It's only a six-day season, so the
clock's ticking every second you're afield,
or somewhere else.
Elk will bed down in mature timber,
often near grasslands, during the day,
Banfield said.
While it's not easy to sneak up on
bedded elk, keep an eye on these spots
if a morning sit proves uneventful. And
pick your way carefully in setting up for
an evening hunt.
"Elk can be pursued in these woodland bedding areas, but the advantage
is theirs," Banfield noted. "Hunters are
easy to spot when they're moving in on a
bedded group. Their eyes, ears and noses
are focused everywhere."
Young forest stands also are worth
targeting on scouting trips.
If sign shows elk are using them,
consider picking out an elevated vantage
point there.
Banfield said many hunters have
been successful calling in bulls, even
though Pennsylvania's hunt occurs
after the rut.
If you're going to try calling, he recommends wading into it carefully.
Remember it's a short season, and your
next elk encounter could be your last.
"If a hunter wants to try calling, I
would probably start with a cow-in-estrus
call over a territorial aggressive bull call
and see what happens," Banfield advised.
"Aggressively bugling is likely to drive a
local bull away that long after the rut."
2018 Hunt
Although minor changes have been
made to the boundaries of EHZs 2, 7 and
8, the biggest news is the creation of EHZ
14, where elk have been living unhunted.
