K N O ZONE W Breaking down those molecule-busting, scent-masking, newly legal devices BY P.J. REILLY JULY 2018 Ozone-dispensing devices now are legal for hunting in Pennsylvania. And, at this point, you might be jumping for joy, thinking you don't need one, or wondering what in world these devices are and what they have to do with hunting. Let's start with that last point. Ozone-generating devices are battery-powered units that generate colorless, nearly odorless, ozone gas that's used to mask a hunter's scent. The devices take in air and force it across a high-voltage coil that breaks apart oxygen molecules, which reform as ozone. Lightning generates ozone in the same fashion when it knifes through the air. Ozone is an oxidant that attacks - and breaks down - scent particles it encounters in the air and on surfaces. Ozone generators long have been used in fumigation after building fires and sewage spills. And storage containers with built-in ozone generators have been used for years by hunters to keep clothes and other gear scent-free. These containers already were legal to use in Pennsylvania. But the devices that generate ozone around a hunter's fixed position only recently became legal for Pennsylvania hunters to use. Here's a closer look at how they're used. Some hunters who have used ozone generators swear by 15
