E SAT WAITING on the porch of
the lodge, legs propped up on his old
Army duffle, his morning coffee steaming
in the chill Rocky Mountain air. Stenciled
in bold letters on the duffle, McINTYRE,
CALVIN J., barely legible now after so
many years. He had said his goodbyes to
co-workers and the ranch owner earlier
at breakfast, and was alone except for
Blitz, his cattle dog, who was fast asleep,
snuggled up against several other bags.
Everything he owned was in the bags,
most of everything he loved, in the hills
beyond. He found some satisfaction that
he was still able to pick up and move on
with little fuss, as he had throughout the
years, having remained free of the trappings of one who dwells too long in one
place.
His was a life defined by the land, how
he lived and worked within it, not by what
he had built or accumulated. It would be
difficult to leave this slice of Colorado
though, as there was a certain magic in
these mountains that held him here longer
than other places. Perhaps it was the elk
and the scenery, or his senior position at
the ranch. But it was his experience that
some indefinable element of the land
sometimes reached out, tethering both
heart and imagination, and there was no
choice but to stay a while.
But move he must, as a litany of
back ailments and arthritic maladies had
advanced to where he had great difficulty
walking, and his duties as ranch foreman
and elk guide had become too much, even

for his wiry frame. At 68 years of age, it
simply was time.
Last week, he had sold his sorrel horse,
Copper, to a friend in Denver. His sister
insisted they could trailer the horse back
to Pennsylvania, that the stable back home
too long had been vacant. But he knew the
horse would be but a luxury. Besides, his
days in a saddle were over.
The dog raised its head and whined,
