SideXSide Action - November 2007 - (Page 16) Tips & Tricks > Side X Side Packing Tips Packing for a big trip out on the trail can be a challenge. Here are some simple tips that can save you time, and a headache: 1.Pack the heaviest items like ice chests as low and forward in the bed as possible. Light items like sleeping bags should be on the top. 2.Use ratchet-type straps to hold everything down tight. Avoid bungee cords. 3.Pack light. More equipment and supplies will weigh your UTV down and affect handling and performance. Do You Like Green Eggs And Ham? If you’re looking for a quick breakfast out on the trail but don’t want to dirty up your pots and pans, just boil it. Using a freezer style zipper bag and boiling water, you can make just about any type of omellete your heart desires. Crack a couple eggs into your zipper bag, add your favorite vegetables and cheese, zip up the bag, shake it, and then let it boil in water until cooked. Give_‘Em A Brake If you’re like me and don’t always get around to performing basic maintenance on your Side X Side regularly, one thing you might want to make sure you check is your brake fluid. Disc brake fluid collects moisture throughout a season of riding and should be flushed out every year. Your machine’s user manual will give a specified type of brake fluid to use, although we suggest using a high-temperature brand. Bleeding you’re brakes is a pretty simple procedure and can usually be done in about an hour. The good ol' boys at High Lifter let us know about the benefits of STP's Sun-Of-A-Gun protectant. Spray this stuff all over your clean UTV and do not wipe it off. Return in an hour and the plastic and metal on your Side X Side will be bright and shiny. It covers scratches particularly well and looks good until the next time you have to wash your machine. Like A Shiny Penny Don’t Pay Full Price> This tip is from Mike Reid from Sudbury, Ontario Canada - If you blow an oil cooler line, go to a local hydraulic shop for a replacement instead of the Dealer. I blew a cooler line on my Yamaha Big Bear and the hydraulic shop only charged me $20 as opposed to $180 Canadian from the Dealer. Get The Long Travel Stance For Less Cash If you’re looking to get a wider stance but don’t want too much width, or don’t want to pay for an expensive long travel kit, get wheel spacers. Wheel spacers will give you the added track width you’re looking for but won’t diminish your bank account. You can purchase them at many Side X Side aftermarket accessory companies and they install in just minutes. Many of the wheel spacer brands out on the market will give you an additional 3-5” in track width. This is perfect for the recreational sand rider who wants to get a wider stance for stability in the sand, but doesn’t want to be stuck with the extra width on tight trails. 16 www.sidexsideaction.com http://www.sidexsideaction.com
