SideXSide Action - January 2008 - (Page 32) The activities lasted into the evening. All the units lined up for the Top 50 Custom UTV Show. Andre from Trail Armor had the winning hand on the poker run. The afternoon brought the trail riders back to the Top 50 Rally Park for some entertaining events. Sled pulls, tug of war, barrel racing, and pole bending were just a few of the events that you could enter. The sun dropped quickly on the first night of fun and the last of the events was lighted with the crowd’s headlights…quite the sight. Two events that were definitely crowd pleasers were the Mud Bog and the Show and Shine. The Mud Bog was an impromptu event that left everyone talking and laughing. The Legend Top 50 Custom UTV Show lined up quite a few tricked-out Side X Sides. But what we wanted to know was what people thought was the best unit for the Black Hills area. So we had some local judges pick out two Yamahas and two Polaris’s and then we gathered the crowd and did crowd cheers to figure out which of the four was the best. The pick of the litter was Reggie Johnson’s Rhino. He received a $500 Legend Off-Road Air Suspension gift certificate and is highlighted on page 33. Evening activities, which were hosted under the big white tent, featured raffles, giveaways, trophies, and pictures. The raffle was packed with huge prizes, including four $500 gift certificates from Yamaha, a complete WARN Winch package totaling over $5000, all sorts of big items from Seizmik, and a world of other items. As tons of raffle prizes and giveaways kept the crowd on the edge of their seats, pictures from the day’s trail rides were shown on the big screen. Hot breakfast, bag lunches, and a delicious dinner on Sunday night were provided by Penny and Michelle from The Covered Wagon Resort. For the history buff, the Covered Wagon Resort was the first-ever RV park in the Black Hills area, opening in 1940. If you are looking for a place to stay next year, call now. They will be booked up for sure! Ok I admit it; South Dakota has never been on my list of places to visit. But I am glad that I did! The Black Hills area is amazing. With ghost towns, lots of history, and miles and miles of amazing trail systems, there are many days worth of exploring to do. I know we are going back for sure – and I hope that by now you have reached for your 2008 calendar to mark “BLACK HILLS UTV RALLY” across Labor Day Weekend! See you there! keep the Black Hills area in the hands of responsible off-roaders Greg Mumm (Executive Director, Blue Ribbon Coalition), Craig Bobzien (Supervisor, Black Hills National Forest), Tom Blair (Chairman, National Forest Service Advisory Board), Chris Avrill (Deputy Sheriff), Ross Brown (President, Off-Road Riders Association), and Patty Brown (OffRoad Riders Association).
