This is a terrain that no matter how many times you ride it, you never get bored and always find new ways of exploiting the fun buried within. So what is this methodical crust of mother earth you ask? Sand. If you’ve ever ridden in sand, you know where I’m coming from. You either love it, or hate it, or you’re just a wuss and don’t want to admit it. Either way, once it’s in your system it won’t let you go, and for those of you who are privileged enough to have had a sand experience and feel the same way I do about it, your Mecca awaits. Every year, sand fanatics flock to the coastal town of Costa Mesa, CA for the largest sand-specific show of the year. This show is a dream come true for those who love sand and it’s very easy to get lost in the sea of sand cars, Side X Sides, trucks, RVs, clothing, and other miscellaneous sand paraphernalia. This year, I was able to get out to the show a little early (on Thursday before it opened) and catch some of the behind-the-scenes bits and pieces that go into putting this whole show together. I watched as throngs of sand car builders, aftermarket accessories companies, and show staff scurried to set up their booths and displays for the tens of thousands that would be walking through the gates the next day. 38 SIDE X SIDE ACTION MAGAZINE The show starts on Friday evening, making it easy for those who want to get out to the show for early specials and those getting off work in Orange County to quickly browse the show. Friday’s turn-out was pretty impressive, with the gates opening at 5PM and closing at 10PM, the night full with a steady crowd of onlookers throughout the whole time slot. Saturday morning came quickly and, as soon as the gates opened at 9 AM, it was like the light switch was turned on. Floods of people crowded the isles, either looking for their next purchase or just looking. I think that even if you’re not as addicted to the sand as I tend to be or if you’ve never even been to sand dunes, just looking
