SideXSide Action - January 2008 - (Page 60) They have about five dozen head of slow-moving cattle; although we never did run into a cow, they are out there. It is not uncommon to run across boars, swallow tail doves, pheasants, mongoose, and the state bird Nene. The miles and miles of trails have been formed by the group of tour guides, and they rotate trails on each ride so they don’t get too worn in and so people can come back multiple times to see different country. The terrain was constantly changing on the eight-mile loop, from easy red dirt roads to narrower trails with water runoff ditches adding some more challenging aspects. Some of the dirt was so dry and soft that it created puff clouds around the Rhinos. Then, as it was moist and rainy toward the top of the hill, the red dirt was darker and smoother. It’s easy to see how a good rain could potentially create some slippery red mud. On The Trail: Hawaiian Adventures As we approached the halfway point, they brought us to “The Garden.” It is here that I learned that pineapples grow in the ground (Don’t laugh at me!) and what sugar cane actually looks like. They cut some fresh bananas off the tree for us to try – they are much sweeter than what we buy in the store! Our well-versed guide also introduced us to the state flower, some state birds, and other local agriculture plants. While we were there, we walked out to an amazing cliff lookout. From there we could see into a huge gorge that had a spectacular view of the shear rock walls and beautiful tropical landscapes of Kahoma Valley. We made it about 2,500 feet up the 5,000 ft. mountain. The view of the ocean on the way back down was gorgeous. A big white ship was docked in Lahaina while we were on the ride, which made the ocean look even bigger and bluer. The 450 Rhinos impress me every time I have been in one. The guide who drove me around was an amazing driver and put his machine to the test. We climbed hills in reverse, went down trails at good speeds, and really used the machine. (What we have to do to get pictures!) The 450 held up to the needs of the experienced driver and was gentle enough for the inexperienced drivers. My favorite part of the day was watching my mom out there having a great time, her white smile peaking out from her red-dirt-covered face. The true off-roader that she is, she busted through the river with the most force and came out laughing! Now that’s a cool mom! stories flowed, the ride back down to town was not nearly as quiet as the ride up had been. The Honeymooner couple enjoyed their first experience in a Side X Side and Mom had a great birthday! 808-667-1978 www.kahomaranch.com Kahoma Ranch Tours { Headed To Maui? } 60 SIDE X SIDE ACTION MAGAZINE 46 www.sidexsideaction.com We made it back down to the staging area, took off our now red helmets and goggles, washed up, and then piled back into the van.
