SideXSide Action - February 2008 - (Page 16) Tips & Tricks > Where’s The Party? Upgrade your oil funnel Are you still using that old dirty plastic funnel? You’re probably getting more dirt in your engine when you change the oil than it had before. Recently, I was browsing the autoparts store aisles and came across this little baby. If you’re a meticulous do-it-yourself type, you’ll love what I call “the oil bong.” The funnel is made by Flotool and it costs only about $7. It’s great for getting into those hard to reach spots like the engine oil filler or differential filler. You can twist the bottom section to stop or start the flow of the fluid. The cup portion up top has measuring marks in it so you can see just how much you’re putting in. It also comes with a lid for the top, so you don’t have to worry about debris falling in. < Clutch Case Woes Always carry a tow strap with you when you go out riding. Even if you’re on your property, you should carry one in your SXS. You never know when you might break down or need to help another that has broken down. You also never know when you might need to move something off the trail. If you don’t have a tow strap, you can substitute a ratchet strap. A ratchet strap is good in case you have suspension issues and need to “tripod” back to help. Don’t Be Left Stranded A Springy Situation The plastic case that protects your CVT clutch system is one of beauty, and an extreme pain to remove in such confined spaces. If you’re removing the clutch case off your Rhino, remove the bolt holding your 1. water line to get more clearance when removing the case under the driver side 1. seat base. Also, before re-assebling the cover after making clutch adjustments, be sure to test the vehicle first. The last thing you want to do is get all of those pesky bolts put back in only to find out you need to use a different weight or spring. If you’re in an off-road environment, install the clutch cover with four bolts and then test. At least 2. this way if something is wrong, you don’t have to remove all of the bolts. 3. If you’re working on your clutch system and need to replace your primary or secondary spring, you may run into a little problem. When you’re re-installing the spring, you need to compress the spring to be able to get the nut onto the shaft. There is a compression tool that you can purchase, but if you’re in a pinch we found a pretty simple solution to your compression problems. If you’ve got two people, this will work out pretty well. First, start out with some heavy-duty zip-ties; zip tie between the coils and get them snug. You’ll want to do this in layers and you’ll want to use about 20 zip ties for the whole spring to ensure they don’t break. Once you have the zip ties in place, have someone stand on the spring and then tighten all the zip ties. Once all the zip ties are tight, have the person slowly step off the spring. If you’ve done it right the spring will be compressed and you can install it onto the clutch shaft and get the nut tightened. Once you’ve got the nut threaded you can cut the zip ties and then torque the nut. Don’t zip tie the top and bottom coils or you won’t be able to get them out. 16 SIDE X SIDE ACTION MAGAZINE
