SideXSide Action - February 2008 - (Page 69) [ Places To Ride ] GA: TRAIL RIDING Broad River ATV Park, Carlton SIDE X SIDE Broad River ATV and MX Park is a privately held, 2500-acre property for dirt bikes, ATVs, Side X Sides, and any small off-road vehicle. They are open every day except Christmas. Hours of operation are 8:00am to 5:30pm in the winter and 8:00am to 6:30pm in the summer. The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System is a statutory corporation created by West Virginia legislation for the purpose of economic development through tourism in nine southern West Virginia counties. As of March 2007, the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System totals several hundred miles of off-road trails in five of its nine project counties. Each of its six trail systems are open to ATVs, Dirt Bikes, select Utility Vehicles (UTVs), Mountain Bikes, Horses, and Hikers. Many of the trail systems also offer community-connecting trails that allow visitors to access “ATV friendly towns” to experience the charm of southern West Virginia. The six Hatfield-McCoy trail systems are Browning Fork, Buffalo Mountain, Dingess Rum, New Indian Ridge, Little Coal, and Pinnacle Creek Trails. No matter which trail system you choose, Hatfield-McCoy Trail visitors can expect to find a variety of trails ranging from easiest to most difficult. These are not your typical “flatlander” trails, however, and can be a challenge for a first-time rider. For this reason, visitors may choose from a list of ATV guided tour and rental providers. You can find a listing of these providers and a complete list of lodging facilities by visiting the Hatfield McCoy trail website. Hatfield McCoy Trail System: They have 80 miles of trails that wind through a variety of terrain: swamp, hard pack clay, rock, sand, and mud. A ‘loop’ road connects all of the trails, and in the interest of safety, loop road and all the roads are one way. The park is very excited to get more Side X Side vehicles out to their facility and encourage those with SXSs to bring them out and enjoy the riding in their park and on the track! Keeping Clean: Broad River Park has two bays for self-serve where anyone can wash off their machines or clean out their radiators. They supply two bays with hoses capable of knocking off the mud. Full service wash- One of the park’s employees will wash off your machines while you get the rest of your affairs in order. Drop off your machine and let them remove the mess while you get cleaned up and ready to go. Then come and load your machines and you are ready to go home and relax. Full service hours are variable and the price of this service is reasonable. The park also offers public, separate hot showers for men and women. Use of these facilities is included with your park admission. They are located just down from the pavilion. www.broadriveratv.com [ Know Your Limits ] Many of the larger trail systems or offroad parks have trail ratings. These are just like ski slope ratings on the mountains; they are usually color-coded and will rate the trail’s difficulty. It is very important that the driver knows his or her driving limits before heading out on a trail. If you don’t feel comfortable on the trail, then you’re probably not ready for that difficult of a trail.
