SideXSide Action - February 2008 - (Page 74) adding weight or lessening weight it changes your engagement, top RPM, and backshift. There are two different types of weights. There’s a heavy tip weight and a light tip weight. A heavy tip weight will pull harder on the top end and will bring down your RPMs if they’re too high. The downfall to a heavy weight is that it will not backshift as quickly in any gear. The weights will affect the engagement of the clutch before the spring does. Clutch Belt Secondary Clutch The secondary clutch is very important in the clutch system and where it’s positioned with the primary clutch can affect your clutch system just as much as adding weight and changing springs. There are a couple different areas to focus on when dealing with the secondary clutch. First, you’ve got your secondary spring, which is similar to a primary spring, but functions a little different since the secondary clutch deals primarily with the clutch belt. The secondary spring affects three functions: upshift, backshift, and belt slippage. The stiffer the secondary spring, the slower your clutch will upshift. This added weight load creates more resistance and takes more pressure from the secondary to shift. The clutch belt can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Clutch belts are easy to get to and simple enough to change, but if the belt is set too loose or too tight, this can cause your SXS to shift too soon or can cause misses in shifting, not to mention belt failure. You can change the belt’s tightness by adjusting the secondary clutch and moving it closer or more far away from the primary clutch. The amount of slack in the clutch belt between the primary and secondary clutch is called “belt tension” or “belt deflection.” Polaris Ranger Clutch Kit The next key point to the secondary clutch is where the clutch belt is positioned on the clutch roller. If you’re installing an aftermarket secondary spring you will need to spread the rollers apart to get the belt down into the groove. If the belt is riding too high on the roller it will rub against your plastic CVT case. If it is too low it will create slack in the belt and you’ll get slippage. Where the belt rides on the secondary clutch roller is related to how much belt deflection and slack is in the belt. If the clutch belt is loose, you’ll get slow clutch engagement and poor performance. If the belt is too tight on the rollers, it will squeal and will cause the belt to wear and possibly break. If your belt is worn, frayed, or in reduced condition, replace it. You may need to buy an aftermarket clutch belt for better performance and a longer life, but the investment is well worth it. As you can tell, for this article on clutch systems we are only dealing with the external clutch parts, and for many of these adjustments mentioned you will not need to drain the engine oil or get into the engine case. However, with some external clutch alterations you will need Each kit comes with a set of machined weights, primary spring, complete roller secondary clutch, secondary spring, and custom angle helix. $342.00 Complete Clutch Kit www.bikemanperformance.com Yamaha Rhino Clutch Kit This kit for the Yamaha Rhino from EPI performance comes with a stiffer secondary spring, heavy duty sprague springs, clutch sheave weights and a heavy duty belt. www.erlandsonperformance.com WWW.SIDEXSIDEACTION.COM 73
