SideXSide Action - April 2008 - (Page 14) Tips & Tricks > Zip It For anyone who has ever had to replace a CV boot, you may appreciate this tip. Most CV boot kits come with metal bands to secure the boot to the CV. These metal bands are great and they look really nice, but are a pain to install, especially if you don’t have the right tools. Lucky for you your Side X Side doesn’t exert a whole lot of force and a zip tie will hold your CV boot in place under many riding conditions. I actually prefer to use a heavy-duty zip tie on my CV boots rather than using the metal bands. A zip tie can be installed within seconds using basic tools and it can be take off in seconds with a pair of snips. Did I mention they’re really cheap? CV Boots giving you trouble? RZR Belt Fix A lot of people have been asking us lately how they can keep the belt on the Polaris RZR from fraying. Well, there’s no real solution to the issue of belt wear, unless you want to drive your RZR like a grandma. Polaris offers a heavyduty clutch belt for extreme conditions. There are also aftermarket companies on the market selling heavy-duty clutch belts. If you’ve had problems with your belt fraying or breaking, this may be your solution. Oil The Foam Don’t Let Dirt Ruin Your Day Are you tired of your goggles letting dust and sand through the foam? Then do something about it. This foam is important in letting air flow in and keeping the goggles from fogging up. However, some goggles let through a little too much. If you’re goggles are letting through too much dust, reach into your kitchen cabinet and take out the cooking oil. Similar to your Side X Sides engine air filter, the goggle filter acts the same way. So by greasing up your goggle filter, it will catch the small dust particles easier and 1. keep your eyes nice and dry. Now you can concentrate on more important things, like driving. Flat Tires Got You Down? One of the worst feelings when you’re out on the trail is the pounding of your wheel against the hard packed dirt or rocks, due to a flat tire. No-one wants to be stranded out on the trail and, if you don’t have a spare, a flat tire can leave you in a bad situation. There are two main reasons a tire will deflate: 1. A puncture in the tire 2. The tire comes unseated from the bead on the wheel. There are two things you can do to prevent both of these from leaving you stranded on the trail. A Punctured Tire: While there’s no preventing a nail or branch from puncturing your tire, you can prevent it from going flat once the tire is punctured. By putting a product like SLIME or Ride-On TPS in your tire, this will help close small punctures and get you to your destination. For larger puntcures, a set of Tire Balls will do the trick. Tire Balls are balls that you place in your tire that will prevent it from going flat, even if the tire is severed or punctured. If you run Tire Balls in your tire, you don’t even have to run air, although some people like to have a mixture of Tire Balls and air pressure. 1. When changing out your air filter, stuff a clean rag or shop towel into the air-intake tube. This 3. prevent dirt from blowing into your carburewill tor or fuel injection system, resulting in clogging and, ultimately, the dirt will find its way into your engine. Don’t let dirt ruin your day of riding. Be kind to your filter and keep it clean. Recently I learned a very important lesson: Dirt and combustion engines don’t mix. Keeping your engine’s air filter clean is very important. If you’re riding in a high dust area or in the sand, 2. be sure to use an outerware. If you don’t have an outerware, make sure that the filter is clean before going out and (for foam filters) be sure that foam oil is applied. Coming Off The Bead: This is a problem that can be avoided by installing a set of beadlocks on your wheels. Beadlocks hold the tire to the wheel, locking them together and not allowing the tire to come free from the wheel. If you’re running your Side X Side in rocks and sand, beadlocks can really come in handy when running low air pressure.
