SideXSide Action - April 2008 - (Page 36) excellent finishes throughout, landing him in second place for the series; and despite his late entry to the series, Todd Arthur would have earned enough wins to put him on the podium with a third place overall series finish. Along with the Modified UTV class, there was one more UTV class that ran in 2007 and that was the Super Stock UTV class. The Super Stock racers didn’t have near the turnout as the modified class, but they did manage to have just as much fun! Showing persistence and some serious driving skill, Luke Johnson, one of the youngest racers in the UTV classes, locked in the 2007 Super Stock Championship with his commitment and dedication to the series after racing almost every round in 2007 in the XXX Rhinosports black Rhino. These two racers would be a common sight throughout 2007, as Todd Arthur and Chad George battle it out at Chula Vista. cess, with 20 UTV’s coming out to Antelope Valley, CA to show everyone what they could do. With many off-road fans looking on in amazement at these new race machines, the first round would be dominated by Rick Jameson, as he took wins on both days, kicking off the start of a great season for the UTVs! Not only was the UTV class new for CORR, but throughout the season it also developed into somewhat of a celebrity driver class, as well. This class would see such names as Jeremy McGrath, Sebastian Tortelli, Robin Gordon (Robby Gordon’s sister), Luke Johnson (son of Ricky Johnson), and Kyle LeDuc (Pro Lite racer) take the wheel – among others! was another driver whose track skills in this UTV class were quite impressive, and anytime he was on the track there was a race for the win to be had! 36 SIDE X SIDE ACTION MAGAZINE Despite Jameson’s early domination in the first round, the major players in the 2007 CORR UTV series would become known soon after, as Chad Mittag with Mafia Industries (previously Rhino Mafia) took back to back wins in the second round, and continued to be a force to reckon with throughout the season – bringing out MI’s very cool Polaris RZR partway through the series to mix it up with the Rhinos. Another racer who was always running up front and very consistent in 2007 was Chad George (the son of Funco’s Grant George) in his blue and white Funco-built Rhino. Chad Coming into the series a bit late (better late than never, right?), Todd Arthur, best known in Southern California as the “Flying Banana,” brought his HRT-built yellow Yamaha Rhino and mega driving skills to the series for the first time to the Chula Vista round in June, he brought with him a whole new level of competition for the CORR UTV class. Todd is an excellent driver on any track, and the CORR tracks seem to suit him well. Mittag’s teammate and fellow Polaris driver Travis Peterson, also with Mafia Industries and one of the pioneers of UTV short course racing, was one more racer who put his Polaris RZR through the paces and frequently made himself known in the top five of each field as well. Throughout the season, the CORR UTV class grew as more and more people showed an interest in this new form of short course, off-road racing and for good reason! Where else can you build something amazing, show it off, put it on a great course with the best UTV and offroad buggy and truck racers in the country? The Baldwin family has created one of the most exciting, competitive, and fun-filled racing organizations there is and has brought it to the West Coast. The fact that the UTVs have a place in Championship Off-Road Racing is still amazing to any of us who race these machines Throughout the season, racers would battle different track conditions, motor issues, and typical UTV attrition to race their way to become the top three finishers for the 2007 Series. Chad George would come out the champion of the UTV Mod class with his consistent finishes and competitive driving, earning him first place overall for 2007. Chad Mittag would continue to have And the best is still yet to come! Word has it that in 2008 UTV racing will be off the hook within CORR, with talks of having the UTVs racing later in the day to ensure maximum fan and even TV exposure on the Speed Channel for the coming year! It looks as if the UTVs and the drivers committed to racing them have definitely won a place in the CORR spectator’s and fellow racer’s hearts.
