Polaris was eager to jump on board with our testing and delivered two very different machines from their line-up. The 2008 Ranger XP offers a semi-sport design with bench seating for three and the largest towing capacity in its class. The Ranger XP comes with a 683cc engine standard, incorporates a great suspension system for the trail, and offers a heavy payload capacity for chores around the house. The Ranger RZR is a relative newcomer to and has exploded onto the scene with lots of support from thrill junkies everywhere. The RZR offers one of the biggest engines with a 760cc engine standard. There was no question that the RZR would fit right into our sport class. With a 50+ MPH top speed, 9” of wheel travel, and a 50” width, the RZR is a machine with one thing in mind, fun. sporty nature. Bordering between sport and sport utility, the 700 still made its way into our sport utility class due to its massive dump bed and 345lb. payload capacity. With 700cc of raw power at the throttle and a 55 MPH top speed, the new XTX is a true sport vehicle at heart. John Deere answered the call for our Side X Side shoot-out with two machines that would ultimately define the utility and sport utility classes. Falling into our utility class is the XUV 850D. This diesel workhorse offers an 854cc 3-cylinder engine and boasts an impressive 1,300 lb. towing capacity. Falling into our sport utility category is the XUV 620i. This sportier version of the XUV line packs a 617cc fuel-injected gas engine into an ROPS-certified roll cage. The 620i really offers a wide range of uses, and with 7” of wheel travel, getting off the beaten path is pure pleasure with this sporty utility vehicle. Arctic Cat’s new release of their 700XTX to the Prowler line solidified the Prowler’s Due to its release after our shoot-out date, we were unable to test the new Kawasaki Teryx. However, we were able to get our hands on a Mule 3010 Diesel Trans 4X4. With seating for six and a 953cc diesel engine, the 3010 is a working machine that can haul anything (or anyone) anywhere. The 3010 Diesel Trans fits right into our utility class with a 1,200 lb. bed capacity, 1,100 lb. payload capacity, and a 1,200 lb. towing capacity. Although the 3010 offers limited suspension travel, 14.5” of ground clearance easily gets it over obstacles you find out on the trail. Team Joyner offers many different Side X Side vehicles in their extensive lineup and they chose their Renegade 800 and Trooper 1100 for us to test against the competition. The Renegade 800 fell right into our sport utility class. With an 800cc engine coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission, the Renegade can really get up and go. The Renegade and Trooper are the only vehicles to offer 5point seat belts standard, providing peace of mind to driver and passenger. The Trooper dove right into our sport class with a 1,100cc engine and 12” of wheel travel.
