ST. MARTIN PARISH SCHOOLS
St. Martin Parish Schools is working to meet new course and evaluation standards while launching a new virtual campus.
t. Martin Parish Schools’ relatively small size is not stopping it from offering students a variety of educational options beyond traditional classroom instruction. The St. Martinville, La.based district serves an enrollment of 8,000 students in 16 schools located in largely rural areas, an arrangement that gives it a close tie to the community it serves.
Next year the district will launch a virtual program for students in grades seven through 12 that will offer students the option of computer-based education. Classes and regular course instruction will be available online through the Education 2020 platform, and students will be able to take classes in-person or online. Testing will be conducted and supervised on-site in a “virtual center” with computers. The center will also offer counseling and tutoring as needed. Students will register in-person at their community school and will sign contracts stating they are responsible for keeping up with their online coursework. “This offers a different way for students who are individual learners,” Lavergne says. “They will be students of their local school, but may not need to set foot in the school outside of testing times.”
“It’s a very tight-knit family here – everybody kind of knows one another,” Superintendent Richard Lavergne says. “People just love their little local schools.”
