Its 53,000 students – of whom 20,000 are credit-seeking – attend classes at a variety of locations besides the 230-acre Arnold, Md., campus.

AACC also offers extensive lifelong learning opportunities and non-credit, continuing education to those seeking career training or retraining, working to boost basic skills or pursuing new areas of interest.
The importance of community colleges to the country’s training and retraining needs has been highlighted by the college’s participation in government activities. The college responded to a presidential call to action by establishing the Student Success 2020 program, which set the goal of doubling the number of degrees AACC confers. A professor at the college was invited to attend a summit at the White House in October 2010 by the vice president’s wife, Jill Biden. Established in 1961, AACC is a fully accredited, two-year public institution offering credit programs leading to an associate degree, certificate or a letter of recognition. The college has established an alternative energy systems degree and

The AACC Virtual Campus makes the college’s educational programs available any time and any place – locally, regionally, nationally and globally – to learners with academic, professional and life enrichment goals. Approximately 45 percent of the college’s students have taken at least one online course. An array of credit distance education courses are available to complete a degree, certificate or letter of recognition or to update workplace skills. A variety of continuing-education distance-education courses also are available.
