Energy & Mining International - Spring 2012 - (Page 10) + U R A N I U M | DEPARTMENT AND FEATURES Spring 2012 Uranium Next? With tensions throughout the Middle East rising, demand for nuclear energy and uranium may grow in 2012. BY SEBASTIAN THALER L ast year, the world witnessed the “Arab Spring,” a wave of activity that included revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, a civil war in Libya, and uprisings and protests in more than a dozen other Middle Eastern countries. Yet even as thousands demonstrate for greater freedom, turbulence in the region threatens to drive oil prices higher — and provide a potential new boost to the nuclear power industry and the uranium market. This past January, a senior member of Iran’s parliament threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz – the entry point to the Persian Gulf – if sanctions by the European Union (EU) blocked Iran’s oil exports. This statement by Mohammad Kossari, deputy head of the Iranian parliament’s foreign affairs and national security committee, reiterated a threat made by Iranian officials a month earlier, which caused a temporary oil price spike. The EU measures, which included an immediate embargo on new contracts for crude oil and petroleum products, were conceived as sanctions over the Iranian nuclear program. 10 emi-magazine.com http://www.emi-magazine.com Table of Contents for the Digital Edition of Energy & Mining International - Spring 2012 Energy & Mining International - Spring 2012 Contents Back to Reality Back to Reality Spreading Accountability Water to Energy Ad Index The Marcellus Shale Ariel Corp.
