CAN’T LIVE WITH OR WITHOUT IT First, consider the fact that North America has a lot going for it when it comes to developing its natural energy resources— indeed, more than the majority of regions around the world. Despite the commonly heard pessimism from mining executives on the difficulty of permitting in the United States and Canada, these regions are still the gems of the global mining industry. According to the most recent survey (2011/2012) of mining executives conducted by the Fraser Institute, a leading Canadian public policy think tank, the A s the residents of the United States and Canada continue to fret over 2012’s record high gas prices, energy industry leaders in every sector are engaged in looking ahead. For example, what are the best ways to develop energy resources at home in order to reduce dependence on foreign nations? Given the Obama Ad- ministration’s oft-stated interest in furthering energy independence, what are the major roadblocks that are preventing the full deployment of this goal, and how can they be overcome?
