[ BY M A R TA J I M É N E Z - L U T T E R ] Canadian Zinc is working carefully to ensure its Prairie> Nahanni National Park Reserve is home to mountain goats, woodland caribou, wolves, black bears and Canadian Zinc Corp.’s mine development Prairie Creek, an advanced-staged zinc, lead and silver property. The location of the mine, nestled in the first site in the world to be granted World Heritage status by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), presents unique challenges for the mining company, but Canadian Zinc is pushing forward to meet and exceed all environmental requirements for this site. Alan Taylor, Canadian Zinc’s COO, recounts the journey its company took to bring the project to fruition. “The environmental assessment, due to our location, has taken two-and-a-half years to complete,” he explains. “During the course of five years, from 2005 to 2010, we also lobbied with Canada’s park authority and the federal government to be recognized as a developer in the area.” The company’s perseverance paid off when Prime Minister Stephen Harper Creek development respects the environment..
