BY CH RISTOPHER CL ICK A ND DAVID B RAN SON I n the recent State of the Union address, President Obama outlined his administration’s commitment to the shale gas production boom that has transformed the energy landscape in North America. This boom and the renaissance of oil production from onshore resource plays have been driven by smaller, focused companies such as EOG Re- 8 sources and Continental Resources. Likewise, in the international arena, independent exploration and production companies are demonstrating that you don’t have to be big to produce big results. In fact, two thirds of all significant oil and gas discoveries by private companies in 2010 and 2011 were made not by super-majors, but rather by a relatively small group of innovative independents. Just luck? The geographical and geological diversity of the new discoveries suggest otherwise. Houston-based Anadarko Petroleum has complemented exploration success in the Gulf of Mexico with success in frontier basins in West and East Africa. Smaller, more focused independents have also had big wins in exploration. Noble Energy last year found game-changing quantities of
