Jay Barnes, CEO and co-founder of Willie’s Restaurants, admits the secret to his company’s success is fairly simple and straightforward. “I don’t think there’s anything magical about this business,” he remarks on page 18. “We just strive to execute better than the competition and give our customers value.” Basic American Foods, the leading producer of dried potato products, abides by the principles of lean to identify efficiencies and offer the best value for its clientele. “We have continuous improvement goals for the entire company that are broken down by functional area, by plant and by line,” President and CEO Loren Kimura explains on page 76. In 2009, Canadian distributor Brick Brewing Co. Limited implemented a new strategic agenda to fill its capacity and optimize its operations. “Within those broad strategies, we set specific goals,” President and CEO George Croft says on page 138. “To fix the business, we needed to establish low-cost leadership, and to date, we’ve realized $2 million in annualized operational savings.”

Even though these companies represent very different areas of the food and beverage circuit, they share one thing in common: an everlasting dedication to continuous improvement, or “kaizen” as called in Japan. Whether you’re a producer, distributor, restauranteur or retailer, realize that there is always room for improvement in your business. It’s not enough to be good at what you do – you have to be better. If you can achieve that, everything else will fall into place.
