Kimpton was inspired by all of
these unique European hotels and
thought that the United States could
benefit from the same type of unique
hotel experiences and first-class
restaurants. "He found that opportunity within his own city of San
Francisco and opened his first hotel,
the Bedford," Vlasic continues.
Coming off the success of the
Bedford, Kimpton saw the beauty
in abandoned historic buildings in
San Francisco and thought they
would be perfect for transforming them into beautiful boutique
hotels. Additionally, because of his
passion for great wine and food,
he wanted to make sure each hotel
had a chef-driven restaurant. Today,
the company has 63 hotels and 70
restaurants in multiple cities, including Baltimore, Boston, Los Angeles,
Miami, New York City and a newly
added market, Pittsburgh.
Kimpton Hotels gives its staff creative control when it comes to each
location. "We really allow our teams
to dictate how that hotel will come to
life within that city," Vlasic says. "Taking certain cues from the architectural significance from each building,
the neighborhood and the pride of
the city helps make it a success."

PROUD PARTNERS
Kimpton Hotels has prospered
through partnerships, which include
working closely with the LGBT community and is the premier national
hotel partner of The Trevor Project.
"They're a pretty unique and invaluable group," Vlasic says, explaining
that the association offers counseling
and support to LGBT youth.
The company also works with The
Trust for Public Land, which focuses
on creating parks and protecting
land. "They're such a great group,"
Vlasic says. "We will often do events

with them or put their magazine into
our rooms for awareness."
Another group that is important to
Kimpton Homes is Dress For Success
Worldwide, a nonprofit group that
helps women return to the workforce.
"It helps through assistance with
clothing, coaching and counseling,"
Vlasic says.
"There's a local chapter in most of
our cities," he continues. "We partner
with [them] to host luncheons or give
them meeting space if they want to
teach people how to interview."

DOUBLING UP
Vlasic joined Kimpton Hotels nearly
17 years ago as the general manager
of the historic Sir Francis Drake in San
Francisco. "My entire hotel career has
actually been in historic, boutique,
four-star hotels," he says, noting that
he previously was a general manager
for Grand Heritage Hotels International Group.
The company will move forward
with the strategy of being "the bestloved hotel company in the United
States," he says, adding that it has
been named five times to FORTUNE's
"100 Best Companies to Work For" list.
"[I see] a lot more growth in communities that we haven't been to
before." Kimpton recently opened a
Hotel Monaco in Pittsburgh, a city it
hasn't had a presence in previously.
"There are so many other cities in
the United States that would benefit
from our type of [hospitality]," he says.
"We're currently in 29 cities right now,
and continuing to add hotels in strategic markets that will complement our
existing portfolio."
