NEWS BY STACI DAVIDSON E CONOMY N EWS NEWS WINTER 2012 Access to ‘Real Jobs’ MORE THAN $500 MILLION IN FEDERAL GRANTS TO COMMUNITY COLLEGES WILL BOOST LOCAL TRAINING IN MANUFACTURING. 8 WINTER 2012 Many manufacturers have been struggling of late because they can’t find skilled employees to staff their operations. Companies lament that business is coming back, but they don’t have the workforce to meet the growing demand. The federal government has heard their cries, and in response is giving $500 million in grants to community colleges and universities around the country for the development and expansion of training programs. The grants are part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) initiative, which promotes skills development and employment opportunities in fields such as advanced manufacturing, transportation and healthcare through partnerships between training programs and local employees. The initiative also supports science, technology, engineering and math careers. In total, 297 schools will receive grants as individual applicants or as members of a consortium, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). There were 27 awards to community college and university consortia, totaling more than $359.2 million, as well as 27 awards to individual institutions, totaling more than $78.2 million. There were 25 states without a winning individual submission, and they will be contacted to develop a qualifying $2.5 million project.
