FLYING HIGH

women at a number of aerospace companies are being recognized
for their significant contributions to the industry.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

This year marked the 30th anniversary for the Women in Aerospace (WIA) organization, which works to expand women's opportunities for leadership in aerospace, as well as to increase their visibility in
the industry.
As in the manufacturing industry as a whole, women's presence
in aerospace continues to grow, and is bolstered by the fact that
many organizations continue to recognize the extensive talents of women in the industry.
First up, in late October, WIA recognized Ball Aerospace &
Technologies Program Manager Lisa Hardaway, Ph.D., with
the Leadership Award for Outstanding Dedication to Space
Exploration. Hardaway joined Ball Aerospace in 1995 and was
most recently the program manager for Ball's Ralph imaging
instrument that flew aboard NASA's New Horizons mission to
Pluto, returning the closest images ever seen of the dwarf planet on July 14. She also has a long relationship with the Hubble
Space Telescope, having worked on three Ball-built instruments. In addition, Hardaway was part of Ball's Deep Impact
mission and worked on the company's star tracker program.
"Coming on the heels of the successful New Horizons mission, the WIA leadership award is icing on the cake and a
wonderful level of recognition," Hardaway says. "There are
so many women in the aerospace industry making significant
breakthroughs and contributions, I am honored to be in their
company and selected for this award."
Also in October, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
honored Barbara Brockett, vice president of engineering test
services at Honeywell Aerospace, with the Suzanne Jenniches
Upward Mobility Award. SWE notes that Brockett has championed initiatives such as the Honeywell Aerospace Women's
Council, Women and Honeywell Engineering Network, and
the corporate diversity organization recruiting program. She
has been a leader in establishing Honeywell's participation in

SWE, and at the WE15 conference, she sponsored a team to implement sustainable, cost-effective improvements.
"As I advanced in my career, I noticed there were only a handful
of female engineers in leadership, and the pipeline did not represent diverse talent," Brockett says. "Over the years, SWE has
been a foundation and inspiration, enabling my colleagues and
me to deploy new programs for hiring, developing and advancing
women and minority engineers. Today, I work with many talented and diverse engineers who are collaborating in exciting ways
to produce sustainable outcomes for our company."
Hardaway and Brockett are longtime members of the industry, but aerospace also wants to showcase the talents of new
professionals. In November, the Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI) named Jennifer Salmon, payload
manager at Space Systems Loral, as a future industry leader.
Salmon was a leader in planning and coordinating investigative passive intermodulation testing of a complicated antenna
configuration that pushed the power limits of SSL's test range.
The success of her work resulted in new standards for the payload department, and she co-authored a paper on the findings,
which was published at the 2014 AIAA Space conference.
"For someone so young, Jennifer Salmon already plays a leadership role at SSL, both in meeting customer expectations, and
in helping evolve our satellite solutions," says John Celli, president of SSL. "Our goal at SSL is to recognize excellence and to
keep talented young professionals like Jennifer challenged and
excited about the work they do. I'd like to congratulate Jennifer
on this well-deserved award and to thank the SSPI for its ongoing programs and support for the satellite industry." mt
