While manufacturers are not without their HR challenges, there are reasons to be optimistic. Manufacturers
are taking bold steps to engage the
next generation of "makers," initiating hands-on educational programs
to help build a new group of skilled
workers to take the positions left
open by retiring baby boomers.
In 2014, the Manufacturing Institute's "Dream It. Do It." program motivated some 365,000 students across
the country to consider a manufacturing career. There are 8,000 manufacturers participating in programs
to help them recruit students. These
initiatives, coupled with a well-developed HR strategy, will help position
manufacturers for a brighter future
when it comes to recruiting and retaining great employees. mt

C OVER STORY

Employees perform better when
there are clear expectations and
well-defined roles. Therefore, it is important to:
* Develop detailed and thorough
job descriptions;
* Establish a formal review process;
* Institute a corrective action and
discipline procedure; and
* Recognize and reward high performance at a corporate level.

M ANAGEMENT

Performance Management

In order to attract and retain the best
employees, manufacturers must compete with other employers by offering:
* Competitive salaries;
* Health insurance and other benefits, flexible spending accounts,
retirement programs, etc.;
* Company perks, such as tuition
assistance, adoption assistance,
employee discounts, etc.; and
* Volunteer programs.

To enhance compliance, a company's
HR strategy must include elements
such as:
* Employee handbooks and procedures manuals;
* Required federal, state and local
postings and employee notices;
* Methods for staying up-to-date
with compliance (e.g., subscription services, participation in HR
networking, a competent employment lawyer, and attendance at
free seminars provided by federal
and state agencies, business associations and law firms); and
* Employee life cycle procedures
(e.g., having a compliant employment application, effective interviewing and hiring, and employment termination process).

A Strong Strategy
A well-defined company philosophy
should address the following questions about the business:

ilar state laws, which encompass
classifying exempt versus non-exempt workers, minimum wage
and overtime pay requirements.
* State laws, which dictate compensable time, pay frequency requirements, final pay procedures, wage
deductions, break times, etc.

Manufacturers that do not have a
well-crafted HR strategy can follow
these steps to implement one:
1. Create and empower a committee
or individual to lead the initiative.
2. The committee/lead should perform an evaluation of the company in key areas relating to HR
(e.g., employee recruitment processes, retention rates, employee
satisfaction, communications,
employer-employee relations,
compliance with workplace regulations, corporate culture, etc.).
3. Based on the evaluation, establish
priorities.
4. Define the strategy components.

* What is the company's current
culture and what would you like it
to be (e.g., formal, informal, creative, industrious, etc.)?
* How do you see the role of HR?
* What values are you looking to
add to your company (e.g., competitive advantage, leading-edge
technologies, new markets, etc.)?

Developing a well-defined HR strategy will help manufacturers overcome
the negative perception and better
compete with other employers when
recruiting and retaining top talent.
By establishing formal company
goals for managers and employees,
everyone in an organization will have
a better understanding of the company's mission and how their roles relate to it. An effective HR strategy can
also help establish an organization's
corporate culture and management
style; both important to employee job
satisfaction. On a more tangible level,
having an HR strategy will improve a
business' overall value and viability,
enhance risk management, reduce the
risks of workplace fines, audits and
lawsuits, and achieve a more compliant workforce. All these factors can
pave the way for a manufacturer to
become a true "Employer of Choice."
