are market shifts."

GOING GREEN
H.T. Berry says it has always been environmentally friendly
and focused on sustainable solutions. But five years ago, Nolan
knew the company needed to make a big impact. "We didn't
want to talk the talk; we needed to walk the walk, so we found a
great cost-savings initiative, but also a clean initiative," he says.
The company invested in and implemented a $1 million solar
panel project thanks to a government grant that paid for onethird of the project. H.T. Berry is 100 percent energy independent, which means that all the power for computer, lights and
everything else is generated by solar power. "This is a win for
customers, our budget and we became electricity independent," Nolan says.
Even H.T. Berry's customers have environmental sustainability goals. For example, one of its customers became very
invested in composting. Because of this, H.T. Berry began carrying a full line of compostable products, such as trash bags and
coffee cups.
"That's a big part of where we continue to evolve," Nolan
says. "It's been an exciting time rolling out new products under
our sustainable solutions platform and our customers are really
embracing them."
Sustainability efforts have had an active effect on revenue
growth. The environmentally friendly products are going up in
sales and the non-certified green products are stagnant, if not
going down. Nolan can trace a lot of its newer clients to the sustainability efforts because the company's salesforce knows how
to promote those products. "We can tailor-make a sustainable
plan for any business," Nolan explains. "A lot of salespeople can
close accounts because we have a plan in place and are able to
deliver on it."
The company has grown so rapidly that in 2014 H.T. Berry
added a 20,000-square-foot expansion to its warehouse for
bulk storage. It can keep more of these sustainable products
in its inventory as it continues to grow that side of the business. The company can also stay true to its history by offering the highest-quality products with an environmentally
friendly edge.
"I'm very proud of our history," Nolan says. "Mr. Berry, our
founder, was a true entrepreneur and a workhorse. That entrepreneurial spirit is so embedded in our culture. Everyone
has to kick in and do their job. That reputation hopefully carries itself into the market and people see how committed we
are. The entrepreneurial spirit that started at the beginning
still lives on today." q
