Don’t buy them. • Buy used text books. • Take advantage of free pens and pencils at business conferences. • Keep track of your pens and pencils. You’ll spend less on them if you don’t lose them all the time. • Buy back packs that your kids can use for years. While they might think the Sponge Bob Square pants one is cool in 2nd grade, they probably won’t think it’s cool in 4th. Computers • Use open source software like OpenOffice for your computing needs. Here’s a huge list of all the open source software you’ll ever need. • Refill ink cartridges instead of buying new ones. • Print off your documents in draft mode. It’s faster and saves ink. • Use free online storage for all your digital storage needs. • When you buy new computers or printers, keep the old cables. You never know when they’ll come in handy. Gifts • Make your own greeting cards. • Make your own wrapping paper. • Agree with family and friends to NOT buy each other Christmas presents this year. • Offer to give a service, like a night of free babysitting as a gift, instead of buying stuff. • Give baked goods. Everyone loves cookies! • Learn the art of the re-gift. If you get something that you don’t like, keep it and give it to someone else later. However be careful to keep track of who gave you what. You don’t want to give a gift back to somebody. Money-Saving Gas Tips How you drive and maintain your vehicle can either increase or decrease your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and your gas costs. Consider these simple tips that can add up to savings worth weeks of groceries or other needs for you and your family. Why pay more at the pump than you have to? Drivers can save up to 80 gallons of gasoline, or up to $310, by driving sensibly on the highway. If you don’t have a “lead foot,” your savings may be closer to 10% at highway speeds – about $95 Drive sensibly. Around town, sensible driving can save 5% – up to 30 gallons of gasoline and up to $115. Cut Miles. If you can cut your vehicle miles traveled by just 5% through combining trips, walking, biking, or taking public transportation, you can save up to $115 per year on gasoline costs. Walking and biking are good for your health too! Choose the Right Vehicle. If you own more than one vehicle, drive the one that gets better gas mileage whenever possible. If you drive 12,500 miles a year, switching 10% of your trips from driving a car that gets 20 mpg to one that gets 30 mpg will save you almost $80 per year. Turn Down the Air. Operating the air conditioner on “Max” can reduce mpg by 5-25% compared to not using it. It‘s a ”drag.“ Avoid carrying items on your vehicle‘s roof. A loaded roof rack or carrier increases weight and aerodynamic drag, which can cut mileage by 5%.
