PROView - September 2008 - (Page 16) (TECH TIPS,continued from page 15) When other browsers are installed on a computer, they generally set themselves up to be the primary web browsing application. This can be a nuisance for Realtors who primarily use their computer to work in Tempo, but can be easily fixed in one of two ways. As each ActiveX control is installed, a Tempo 5 logo with a red checkmark within it will appear at the right hand side of the page. If you see a red X in any of the blue Tempo logos, try clicking the Install button again. If the problem persists, please call the help desk at (727)3447767 The first and most simple way to work around this problem is to have a shortcut to IE on the computer desktop screen. By default, most Windows operating systems already have the big blue ‘e’ on the desktop, but this may not always be the case. If the IE icon is not available on the desktop, it should be available in the Programs folder of the Start menu in the lower left hand corner of the screen. A shortcut can be created by right-clicking on the program name, left-clicking ‘Send To’, and left-clicking ‘Desktop (create shortcut)’. The second and slightly more advanced way to work around this issue is to set IE back to being the default web browser. This will negate the changes the other browsers made to the computer and use IE when shortcuts and web links are activated. To do this, open up the IE browser and left-click the tools button in the menus at the top of the screen. In the drop-down menu, left-click ‘Internet Options’ and a new window will open. The pop-up window will have several tabs at the top, left-click on the tab entitled “Programs”. In the area named ‘Default web browser’ there is a button ‘Make default’. Left-click this button followed by the ‘Apply’ button to make IE the default web browser for the computer. Accessing Tempo can be made even quicker by making the PRO website the IE homepage. First go to the PRO website at www.tampabayrealtor.com. Once on this page, left-click the ‘Tools’ button in the IE menus at the top of the screen, which will bring up a drop-down menu. Left-click “Internet Options” at the bottom of the menu. A pop-up box will appear on the screen entitled “Internet Options” and the very first section should show the homepage name. Left-click the button below that says “Use current” and click the APPLY button at the bottom of the pop-up box to save the settings. This will set your homepage to the PRO website and give you direct access to the Tempo MLS and all other features of this site. Once you see a checkmark next to each item on the page you can close the page and start utilizing the best of Tempo 5.0! What’s the Flavor of your Browser? by Joe Kolenda – MLS Technology Support Our helpdesk receives many calls associated with the use of an incorrect browser. When an improper browser is used, the MLS Tempo system will not function properly or may not function at all. Tempo may appear distorted, with portions of the screen missing or simple graphic links not working. These and other symptoms may be signs that you are accessing Tempo with the wrong browser. Both Tempo 4 and 5 require the use of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) version 6 or higher to have full functionality. Many users try to access Tempo using AOL, Mozilla FireFox, or Apple’s Safari browsers, but these browsers lack a component known as MSXML, which is essential to running the Tempo software and is only available in IE. Though the other browsers can provide great tools for web surfing, using IE is the key to unlocking all the features Tempo has to offer. 16 PINELLAS REALTOR® ORGANIZATION September 2008 http://www.tampabayrealtor.com
