PROView - September 2008 - (Page 18) Kat McCoy, MLS Manager Dear Miss Manners, Mind Your Manners! I have a quick question. I had a gentleman show one of my listings yesterday, and he was non- responsive to all my calls. Apparently, his main business is not real estate related. His wife or “significant other” is the one who “borrowed” his lock box key and used it under his name. She is also a subscriber and member of PRO. She admitted to me that she was the one who showed the property and that her husband was not there. Is this allowed? I had thought we were not allowed to “loan” out our lock box keys to anyone and something about this also seemed a bit shady. Perhaps I’m wrong - I just thought we were not allowed to share our keys. Let me know, if you don’t mind. Thank you for all you do. Hope you have a great day! Thanks, You know who I am! Dear “I know who you are,” The borrowing of Supra Keys between agents is against the policies of the Pinellas Suncoast Association of REALTORS®. A lockbox breach of security can result in a $5000.00 fine and termination of lock box privileges. What is considered a breach of security includes but is not limited to: • Giving the property keys or access devices obtained from the lockbox container to any individual whatsoever. • Placing the PIN on the key. • Leaving the PIN in the key pouch. • Writing the PIN on the instruction card. • Writing the PIN where it is accessible if lost or stolen. • Allowing anyone (spouse, significant other, team member, personal assistant, etc., other than key holder) to use the PIN or key. The ability to lease a Supra Key is a REALTOR® member benefit. I like to think of it as a privilege or honor. Members of the public are trusting REALTORS® with access into their homes and this trust should not be taken advantage of, even if the key is being shared by spouses. If I were you I would file a complaint with Professional Standards — immediately! 18 PINELLAS REALTOR® ORGANIZATION September 2008
