PROView - September 2008 - (Page 7) Let’s look at a couple of local races and the impact they have on you, and all of us. First, those who win or retain a seat on the County Commission will be the leaders charged with the task of creating economic prosperity through the provision and delivery of core services. Ongoing issues of development, redevelopment, affordable housing, transportation, and the recovery of a challenged housing market are certainly critical issues to all of us. Our economy is heavily dependent on the real estate market, not just for taxes but for sustaining the most basics of needs: a home. Just think about the impact that decisions made by the commission can have on REALTORS®. The County Commission can raise or lower impact fees and property taxes, control zoning ordinances. Let’s look at a recent well-debated issue on Clearwater Beach: consider the impact on REALTORS® when the city banned short-term rentals. For the County Commission race, the member-only Candidate Screening Committee recommends Neil Brickfield, Karen Seel, and Rene Flowers. PRO-Recommended Candidates Pinellas County School Board At-Large District 4: Robin Wikle Pinellas County Commission At-Large District 1: Neil Brickfield Pinellas County Commission At-Large District 3: Rene Flowers Pinellas County Commission Single-Member District 5: Karen Seel Races for other political offices are certain to affect your business as well. For example, consider the impact the new Pinellas County student assignment plan will have on home buyers with school-age children, and effectively the housing market as a whole. For the Pinellas County School Board, the Candidate Screening Committee recommends Robin Wikle. (See ELECTION SEASON, page 20) Each school will be assigned a maximum capacity figure to determine the number of spaces available for students. Spaces will be assigned according to choices made by parents using the preferences. As many firstchoice selections as possible will be filled first. Secondchoice selections will be used only after as many first-choice spaces as possible have been assigned. This process will continue until all students have been assigned to a school. Students not receiving their firstor second choice school will be assigned to a waiting list for possible transfer if space becomes available at one of these schools. Once a student has been assigned a space at a school, that space remains his or hers until the student: • Completes the highest grade at that school level. • Chooses (and is assigned) to attend a different school in the same attendance area. • Moves to a different attendance area. • Enters an Exceptional Student Education Program or Alternative Education Program. PINELLAS REALTOR® ORGANIZATION There are a few key points of this plan that are important to keep in mind. First, students in grades K-4, 6-7 and 9-11 will stay in the school that they are currently attending For those students that are entering grades K,6, and 9th will get their close-to-home school, or they can opt to attend there older siblings school. New students entering the Pinellas County School system will be assigned on a space availability basis to their close-to-home school or the next closest school. The last thing to remember is that NO school is automatically guaranteed to non-entry level grade students that are entering the district for the first time. Existing countywide fundamental schools, magnet school programs, high school academies, and charter schools are not considered part of the choice spaces available in this plan. A separate application process and timeline for these schools have been developed and will be reviewed each year by the Student Assignment Department. The fundamental schools are: • Bay Vista Fundamental Elementary (See SCHOOL CHOICE, page 20) September 2008 7
