PROView - October 2007 - (Page 9) To assist consumers, Governor Crist and OIR announced a new website that will enable consumers to compare homeowner’s insurance rates online. The website, www. shopandcomparerates.com, provides actual insurance rates for over 20 insurance companies for a sample home in Florida’s 67 counties. Additionally, there are several ways a policyholder can reduce premiums while we await the market to improve: 1) Eliminating contents coverage 2) Eliminating windstorm coverage 3) Increasing the amount of an insurance deductible 4) Eliminating sinkhole coverage. 5) Discounts for mitigating or hardening homes: Insurance companies are required to provide premium discounts to homeowners who demonstrate that they have taken actions to protect their home against windstorm. These discounts are usually applied in two main categories: opening protections and strengthening roofs. In summary, policymakers and regulators probably raised expectations a little too high. The actual savings realized by Floridians from the new law will be less than advertised. Further, many policyholders have been and will continue to be disappointed as they see their renewal bills containing previously approved rate hikes that have not fully been instituted. However, when one reviews the recent history of property insurance rates in Florida and the seemingly endless and significant rate inflation in the state, we at least have seen a reprieve of that inflation and will experience some rate relief over the coming year. Perhaps most importantly, we need to hope for a continuation of the lack of hurricane activity. Among other things, this would put additional downward pressure on private insurance and reinsurance rates. If the opposite occurs the situation could become bleak depending on the level of catastrophic storm activity. In a worst-case scenario, Florida might be forced to plead for federal assistance to minimize the potential for significant damage to our state’s economy.
