PROView - October 2008 - (Page 10) PROActive In Focus: PRO-Recommended Candidates By Brian Shuford, Director of Governmental Affairs Rene Flowers Rene Flowers (D) is running for Pinellas County Commission District 3, an at-large seat which means that citizens throughout the entire county can cast their ballot in this specific race. A native of St. Petersburg and a graduate of Eckerd College, Flowers served on the St. Petersburg City Council for nine years, responsible for a budget of nearly $900,000,000. An advocate for affordable housing in Pinellas County, Flowers is the founder and chair of the City of St. Petersburg’s Affordable Housing Committee. She has lobbied in Tallahassee for the state to spend more of its Sadowski trust funds on affordable housing. She is an active member of the Florida League of Cities, which she served as president from 2006 to 2007. Flowers has also been an advocate for economic development, summer youth employment, job skill training, education, transportation, and health care. Bush to fill an unexpired term on the Pinellas County Commission. She has since been subsequently re-elected in 2000 and 2004. Seel has long been a strong supporter of affordable housing and economic development in Pinellas County and a great friend to and advocate for the RealtoR ® community. She was instrumental in the successful efforts to implement improvements to U.S. 19 and she has been an advocate for the environment, helping to preserve over 1,500 acres in Pinellas County. Karen Seel Karen Seel (R) is running for re-election to the Pinellas County Commission District 5. She received an undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and an MBA from the American Graduate School of International Management. Seel started out her career in public service as a Clearwater City Commissioner in 1996 until January 1999 when she was appointed by then-Governor 10 PINELLAS REALTOR® ORGANIZATION Robin Wikle Robin Wikle, a Pinellas County native, is running for a seat on the Pinellas County School Board, District 4. With a Master’s Degree in special education from Florida State University, Wikle has been a Pinellas County teacher for five years. She has served as president of the Pinellas Teachers Association and the Tarpon Springs for Youth, Inc. board, and she has been an advocate for Pinellas County libraries as well as local youth sports programs. She is committed to providing a safe learning environment for Pinellas County’s students, and working to bring the best and brightest teachers to the county. Wikle believes strongly in increasing parental involvement in their child’s education, and encouraging businesses to incorporate apprenticeship programs in our high schools. As a positive and encouraging board member, she builds bridges among members and seeks effective and creative change. Neil Brickfield Previously serving as City Commissioner in Safety Harbor, Neil Brickfield (R) is running for Pinellas County Commission, District 1.
