PROView - October 2008 - (Page 2) Chairman’s Notes Election Season is in Full Swing – Now is the Time to Make Your Voice Heard by Pat Ivers, Chairman of the Board The U.S. economy is in turmoil, with emergency announcements by the Fed and the Treasury Department broadcast through media outlets virtually every day. Lending issues are at the forefront of the problems we face. Our industry as a conduit to homeownership is certain to continue to feel the restraints as consumers have a difficult time obtaining home loans. Decisions that will have a direct impact on your business have recently been made and more are certain to follow; locally, statewide, and nationally. You have the power to influence those decisions. Your Vote Does Count In the coming days you’re likely to feel bombarded by political messages. Local races for County Commission and School Board seats and Property Appraiser are in full swing and so is of course the presidential race. Now is the time to become educated about each candidate and the solutions they offer for the office they’re seeking. Regardless of who you choose to support, make sure your individual voice is heard. As recent presidential elections clearly have shown, each vote does count. Your Professional Voice Professionally you have a voice too. Supported by REALTORS® across the country, your RPAC dollars are at work for you to bring forth political decisions that will be favorable to your business, your profession, and your industry. The relevance of our political actions is higher than ever before. In the coming months and years the importance of supporting RPAC cannot be overstated. By now you know that President George W. Bush recently signed a historic economic rescue bill, which sets out to revive the U.S. financial system by allowing the federal government to buy up to $700 billion in failed mortgages from banks and other financial institutions. But, did you know that NAR worked on your behalf, backed by RPAC funds, to make sure the bill would pass? Each year, PRO is given an annual goal of fundraising for RPAC. More than a mere number, the dollar amount PRO is responsible for raising from its members is based on 2 PINELLAS REALTOR® ORGANIZATION an outline of goals needed to be achieved. Meeting the goal is essential in order to give our state and national associations the financial tools necessary to combat the forces threatening your livelihood. Falling short of those goals will jeopardize the strength of our efforts and the likelihood of success. We are currently $3,000 short of 2008’s goal. If 300 members contribute $10 each we will have reached our goal. Times are tough, I know, but it is worth $10 to protect your business. That’s inexpensive insurance! I implore you to donate to RPAC today, and encourage your peers to do the same. The political season is in full swing. A lot is at stake. I encourage you to VOTE on November 4. I urge you to make your voice heard. YOUR VOTE COUNTS! October 2008
