Diversity MBA Magazine - April 2008 - (Page 5) Corporate America Taking Diversity Leadership by Storm I’m ecstatic to present this issue to your for a number of reasons. First, I am proud and hopeful about our focus on the Top 50 Companies for Diverse Managers to Work. Through diligent efforts, we feel we have forayed into a realm of research that provides not only qualitative but quantitative data on how people of color and women are faring in Corporate America. We have expanded our research to be more inclusive and put our focus on diverse managers and women. We outsourced our research process to Nia Enterprises, Inc. a minority womanowned business that specializes in online research for consumer markets. We are proud that the 2008 Top 50 Companies list will showcase companies that make a strategic effort to implement accountable diversity strategies so managers of diverse backgrounds can excel and develop into the executive ranks. In the past, our list focused more on recruitment of minority MBAs. However, since most noted business publications currently compile lists on top companies for minorities to work, DiversityMBA Magazine placed the focus on a segment of diverse management and the pipeline development of emerging leaders. We uncovered some very telling best practices by our top companies that we would like to share with our readers in the future. For example, corporate America is making intentional decisions to move diversity forward in their organizations. Representation has grown greatly across most groups and that the programs for awareness and inclusion are M arch 2008 Top 5 0 Co m p ani e s In Your Own Hands … strong. Also, while corporate recruitment is strong in minority communities the pipeline is still not as viable as it needs to be to fill the breach. And most importantly, CEO’ involvement makes the critical difference in the ability of an organization to drive results through diversity. Further, I am also pleased to announce that Bank of America is our top organization demonstrating excellence in diversity. Bank of America’s CEO Kenneth Lewis gets it; he knows what it takes to build an inclusive organization. Read in our cover story how Bank of America leads the way for diverse managers to excel within their culture. Know that along with Bank of America, strides are being made to develop people of color for the next level throughout corporate America. Our Top 50 Companies provide some excellent best practices on how to get the job done. And finally, while we celebrate growth and transition, we are further defining and shaping ourselves to become the leading leadership publication for both professionals and entrepreneurs of color. We aspire to provide not only insightful but factual information so that our readers can go to new heights intellectually. Through our online capability we are broadening our reach to meet global markets around the world. Pam McElvane 5
