"Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: Facts, Not Fiction: Setting the Record Straight," finds that not all Asian-American students score highly on the SAT, or get accepted to highly selective colleges more than students of other backgrounds. The success of a handful of Asian-American students has tended to overshadow the needs of the vast majority, according to the study. Among the stereotypes the report aims to debunk is the notion that Asian-American students gravitate to math and science programs. In 2003, engineering was only the third most prevalent major among Asian-American undergrads, behind business and social sciences. New York University's Asian/Pacific/American Institute and Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy collaborated with the College Board on the study. s part of the Estamos Unidos con un Propositon (We Are United with a Purpose) campaign, Diageo donated $250,000 to the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) for their efforts in helping improve financial literacy among U.S. Latinos. Diageo and NCLR partnered to provide consumers with local financial education seminars free-of-charge and an informational hotline where consumers accessed financial resources, including the campaign’s signature free bilingual audio CD. The donation to NCLR is a culmination of the We are United with a Purpose campaign, now in its third year, which assisted hundreds of Latinos to access financial education resources within their local community. The campaign, supported by Diageo brands including Buchanan’s De Luxe Scotch whisky, Crown Royal Canadian whisky, Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky, Jose Cuervo Tradicional tequila, and Tequila Don Julio, has invested nearly $750,000 to helping improve the lives of Latinos throughout the United States. he National Retail Federation told Congress in July that rebate checks intended to stimulate the economy have helped significantly, but that much of the money has been diverted by high gasoline and June 2008 Top 1 0 0 Unde r 5 0 D i ve rse Le ade rs A grocery prices, and consumer spending would still benefit from additional stimulus measures. Polling in June found that consumers who had received their rebate checks had spent 42.9 percent of the money, but that nearly half of the money spent had gone to gasoline (9.7 percent) or necessities such as groceries (10.4 percent). The total of those two categories exceeded all other spending categories combined, with the nextlargest category, clothing and apparel, amounting to only 3.3 percent. Consumers said 25.2 percent of the money went to pay off debt and 17.1 percent went into savings. comprehensive survey by Radio One, Inc. and North Carolina-based research firm Yankelovich, provides a detailed snapshot of African American life in the United States today, and finds strong group identity across age and income brackets. It also discloses a nuanced look at how African Americans feel about many aspects of life in America, and cautions against a simplistic reading of black America as a monolithic group. The survey, representing nearly 30 million black Americans, identified eleven specific segments within black America today, ranging from Connected Black Teens, Digital Networkers and Black Onliners at the younger end, to Faith Fulfills, Broadcast Blacks and Boomer Blacks at the older end. The segmentation analysis identifies differences regarding everything from what it means to be black today, perceptions about African American history and expectations for the future of blacks, to consumer trends, media preferences and confidence in the church, government, financial services companies and other institutions. 34 percent of those surveyed who are 18 or older have some college or a two-year degree, 21 percent have a bachelorís degree or higher, 40 percent have an annual income under $25,000 (20 percent of whom are retired), and one-third more than $50,000. 68 percent of those surveyed are online (compared to 71 percent of all Americans), and twothirds of them shop online. Among black teens, over 90 percent are online. While 72 percent of blacks say they know how to have fun and 60 percent think things are getting better for them, many often feel stressed (33 percent). Money is the greatest cause of stress (53 percent) followed by the well being of kids (49 percent) and health (40 percent). While only 3 in 10 feel financially secure, 8 in 10 pay their bills each month. |dMBA| 11 A A T
