Diversity MBA Magazine - Fall 2008 - (Page 6) L etters to theEditor Dear Editor, I very much enjoyed seeing the “Top 100 Under 50 Diverse Corporate Leaders” article in your Summer issue. Most people probably have no idea how much talent there is in corporate America once you get past the typical “image” of a corporate leader. Please continue to spotlight the many fine people making a difference behind the scenes. They are very much deserving of your recognition! Monique Edwards Alexandria, Virginia Dear Editor, Before reading your “Going Global” article on international opportunities and assignments, it never would have occurred to me that someone could advance his or her career by taking an assignment abroad. Thank you for expanding my horizons, and for prompting me to think more outside the box – or even the country – as I plan my career direction. That said, I wonder how realistic it is for most professionals of color to consider that option. Most of us don’t work for large firms with operations across the globe, or are in career tracks where that level of project management isn’t an option. If anything, we might be more likely to be offered a temporary relocation opportunity elsewhere in the USA, which can be enough of a culture shock all by itself. Imagine a native Brooklynite venturing to Iowa or New Mexico for the first time, or a Southerner getting his first taste of a Minnesota winter. Those moves can be just as disruptive on family life, and need to be considered just as carefully. Howard Jones Dayton, OH Dear Editor, In our current economic climate, it’s more important than ever for all companies, especially minority companies, to give back and get involved in their communities. Times may be hard for smaller firms, but Peter Nguyen’s piece “Businesses that Keep on Giving” shows that the long-term benefits far outweigh any short-term sacrifices. All companies should be held to a high standard when it comes to their social involvement. Sow Win Hu Houston, TX Dear Editor, My father ran a dry-cleaning business for 32 years. He always made it a point to participate in our local business association, which raised money for scholarships, community projects, and to help other companies get started. In addition, he was always quick to offer advice to other people – even if they were thinking about being one of his competitors! My point is that social entrepreneurship isn’t really anything new. Firms run by people of color have traditionally engaged in one form or another of it, as a matter of the community’s broader survival. What’s different, it seems to me, is that now, more companies are seeing the importance of it, and how it has an impact on the places where they operate. My father would be very surprised to learn that, simply by helping others in the course of being a good businessman, he was ahead of his time! Randy Lasher Tulsa, OK 6 P&L Group, Ltd.
