Diversity MBA Magazine - Fall 2008 - (Page 7) In Your Own Hands … We did it! Our second annual Awards Gala and Leadership Forum was a tremendous success. Both the leadership forum and gala tripled in size, but more importantly the Executive and Emerging Diverse Leaders felt that the networking and leadership forums were uniquely excellent, and in some cases phenomenal. We also thank our 30 corporate partners for their commitment. Special thanks to Harley-Davidson (our lead sponsor), Verizon (our first multi-year sponsor) and American Airlines (our first Official Airline). Picture this: our event brought together some of the brightest minds in the country, which means we are birthing one of the most intellectually powerful networks today. We know exactly what we are building, but it is the investment of corporate America in its leaders that is making our event second to none and truly viable. In this issue, we want to share with you some of the extraordinary talent that conducted our forum sessions through our leadership articles. Not only is the information invaluable, but it also provides a serious critical thinking process that will allow you to share a similar experience. In the first quarter of 2009, we will be introducing webinars to further expand our reach to audiences to engage in our training - stay tuned! On a personal note, I would like to share with you the thread that connects my heart to this journey and the people that have shaped my life. First, let me say that God has blessed me every day of my life with extraordinary people that have left an imprint that has helped shape who I am today. Diversity and Inclusion have been a part of my life, all of my life. When I reflect on my early childhood days, I have fond memories of my neighborhood and my neighbors. Our next door neighbors were an Irish man with a Mexican wife who for many years spoke to us only in Spanish. The rest of the block had Filipino, Korean and Caucasian families, and the largest Baptist Church in town on the corner. We celebrated every culture and its celebrations everyday. And through these celebrations we became aware of the differences of the world around us. We played sports. When we played baseball in the middle of the unpaved street as children, we selected teams based on talent, not the complexion of our skin. I learned a long time ago that most people are good and are willing to follow a strong and fair leader. When I think about the world as it is and the world I grew up in, I want my children to appreciate the extraordinary world of diversity. We also live in a time of unlimited possibilities – especially now, with the first African American man as the President of the United States, Barack Obama. So I embrace the opportunity of a lifetime to reach a global inclusive audience that not only represents who I am but the world in which I live.
