Diversity MBA Magazine - Fall 2008 - (Page 93) HIGHER LEARNING INT'L MBAS FLOCK TO U.S. SCHOOLS Strong foreign currencies, weak dollar creates increase in applications to American universities JUNE 2008 – The MBA Tour reports that rising currency values in Europe, China, and India, coupled with a low U.S. dollar is creating widespread interest in American MBA programs. Both the euro and Chinese yuan have appreciated vs. the U.S. dollar over the past three years; the euro by 30% and the yuan by 17%. “An American two-year MBA is very attractive to European students now, because it’s not all that more expensive than many one-year programs there,” says Craig Hubbell, associate director of MBA admissions of the UCLA Anderson School of Management, which reports a 50% increase in MBA applications from Europe this year. Hubbell cites the currency exchange rate as one of the top factors. Tuition fees rise slightly year to year, but nowhere near the amount the U.S. dollar has dropped. Today a $38,000 U.S. tuition fee will cost a European student approximately 24,200 euros. Five years ago, that same tuition fee cost 33,000 euros, and 10 years ago, 35,000. Students from China and India are also taking advantage of the current less expensive opportunity to study in the U.S. The Chinese yuan and Indian rupee continue to rise and American business schools are seeing an increase in applications from these countries. In major cities in Asia and India, the MBA Tour reports seeing substantial growth in registration for American schools over the last three years at the Beijing, Shanghai, Delhi, and Mumbai conferences. “As these countries’ economies grow, more wealth is created, and therefore more affordability of education,” says Peter von Loesecke, CEO of the MBA Tour. “This means you’ll see more people taking the GMAT, and attendance at our events in China and India will continue to grow. Our attendance in Shanghai has increased by 62% and we’ve also witnessed about a 40% increase in attendance in Beijing. In order to handle attendance at our Bangalore (India) event, we added an additional city to the tour. Our attendance in India is up 28% overall.” The MBA Tour travels internationally with top universities and business schools from around the world, offering MBA candidates the chance to take part in panel presentations and roundtable discussions, hone their networking skills and meet admissions staff from all over the globe.
