~ October 11, 2012 1:45 pm – 3:00 pm A-3 CONCURRENT SESSIONS A (continued) Room Location Trinity Promoting Science Among English Language Learners (P-SELL) Promoting Science Among English Language Learners (P-SELL) is a curricular and teacher professional development intervention aimed at promoting elementary students’ scientific inquiry and understanding and ultimately preparing them for high-stakes science assessment as part of school accountability. In the context of hands-on, inquiry-based science, P-SELL highlights classroom strategies that teachers can use effectively to promote both science learning and English proficiency of English Language Learners. This presentation will address classroom strategies from multiple perspectives: researcher, teacher professional developer, district administrator, school administrator, and teacher. The audience will engage in a hands-on science experiment from the P-SELL curriculum. Review a framework for using these tools in collaborative inquiry groups. Receive user-friendly tools for implementing this systematic, reflective, and collaborative process. Information about advantages of partnering for the benefit of students will be discussed in the historical context of the two organizations. In addition, the presentation will include salient aspects of the educational services Florida offers English Language Learners (ELLs), as well as challenges and opportunities for educators and advocates of these students.
