Innovative and purposeful articulation between district departments, starting with Early Learning and reaching across all departments, leads to enhanced educational opportunities that collectively support and lift the education of ALL children. The presentation will showcase how this model supports the efficient and effective use of personnel to support several of the most critical challenges faced by educators, students, and parents throughout this culturally and linguistically diverse district. Initiatives will include: 1. The creation and empowerment of parental engagement that has evolved to include the St. Lucie County Parent Academy. 2. The enhancement of early childhood education to reach ALL children early and intentionally. 3. The development of a comprehensive science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curriculum focused on reaching students from these various diverse backgrounds and ensuring they have a competitive edge. 4. The expansion of access to informational technology and the Internet for all students to help bridge the digital divide within the district. This interactive presentation will share research findings on the challenges successful superintendents of color faced in their social justice efforts and how they responded to resistance. Discussion will focus on strategies used by these superintendents to narrow achievement gaps and the implications of this research for the preparation and success of superintendents of color. This presentation is ideal for current and aspiring superintendents and for those who prepare and support leaders of color in a profession in which they remain a disproportionate minority.
