Iowa City, Iowa D-4 Alhambra Building a Parent/Student Portal and Introducing it to an Urban Community Denver Public Schools (DPS) built a custom Parent/Student Portal to help parents be more involved with their student’s academic progress and overall school performance. The goal of the tool is to empower parents to support student achievement and make the information accessible to our linguistically and economically diverse populations. The tool is designed to present a variety of student data using graphic displays and a parent-friendly user interface, and it presents this information in six different languages. A major aspect of the project is to increase accessibility to the Internet and increase computer literacy among our parent population. This was done by strategically placing computer kiosks throughout the community and building partnerships with local organizations that provide support with computer training and computer access. The Parent/Student Portal is set to pilot in eight (8) DPS schools beginning in the fall of 2012 with plans to expand district wide over the coming years.
