Room Location D-5 Trinity Increasing Transition Opportunities for Minority Students with Disabilities Public school students with disabilities (SWDs) are mostly served in their neighborhood high schools across the state of Florida. The percentage of these minority students that graduate or age out at twenty-two with gainful employment is rather low. The investigation conducted on one of Florida’s largest urban school districts for this project was guided by Gilbert’s (1978) Behavior Engineering Model (BEM) to determine a number of possible root causes for the gaps identified between current outcomes and desired outcomes for these students. The investigation included data collection through a field survey, focus group discussions and reflections, and structured classroom observations utilizing a checklist. Though much of the investigation’s findings led to continued budget cuts as a major barrier to meeting the school district’s desired outcomes in this area, most of the proposed interventions that were offered and selected are relatively cost neutral or at least low in monetary expenses. Presented by: Jill Brookner, Instructional Supervisor Nick Chang, Transition Specialist Carlos A. Viera, Supported Employment Coordinator Miami-Dade County Public Schools Miami, Florida D-6 Cambridge Preparing Effective Teachers of English Learners in the Age of the Common Core State Standards This presentation focuses on the content and application of two recently revised sets of professional standards for teachers: The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards’ English as a New Language Standards and TESOL International Association’s P-12 Professional Teaching Standards as they relate to the preparation of all teachers to teach ELs of the CCSS. The professional standards’ process of development, purpose, and context of use will be compared. The new demands of the CCSS for ELs will be presented, and a special focus on how professional standards can prepare teachers to implement the CCSS for ELs will be provided. Presented by: Diane Staehr Fenner, President DSF Consulting Fairfax, Virginia D-7 Balmoral Meeting the Needs of Latino Students through Project Based Learning As school districts respond to the urgent call to improve the accomplishments of Latino students and the pedagogical shift the Common Core standards demand, educational leaders and teachers are provided a tremendous opportunity to adopt instructional approaches that better engage students and promote the teaching and learning of 21st century skills. Project Based Learning (PBL) provides school systems with a methodology that prepares teachers to teach those skills in a meaningful, authentic way. Using the key design elements of effective PBL, teachers can deploy rigorous projects based on the content the Common Core standards provide while simultaneously helping ensure equitable access to college and career readiness in a global market.
