Presenters will share a research-based framework for integrating English Language Development (ELD) and STEM. Participants will analyze instruction within the framework and understand how its use contributes to developing successful STEM experiences for ELLs. Participants will create a basic professional development outline to share with their staff. The outline will facilitate the implementation of the hybrid framework to integrate STEM and ELD in a dynamic curricular approach that fosters equity and future opportunities for English Language Learners. Agenda Presented by: Leticia Ruelas, Content Specialist ELD Meghan Kenney, Content Specialist STEM Isaac Elementary School District Phoenix, AZ E-4 Alhambra Anatomy of a Process: Preventing the Long-Term ELL Student Population Learn how a large Texas “Recognized” school district of 91 schools is working to ameliorate the long-term ELL student. This presentation will examine results of high-level implementation of effective ELL strategies, fidelity to the established ELL programs, stakeholder awareness and ownership of identified areas of improvement to decrease the number of ELLs transitioning from elementary to secondary level. We will reflect upon the experience of collaborative efforts of one school district in its journey to increase the academic rigor for the ELL student population, including the use of the Texas Literacy initiative, a professional development model for continuous improvement.
