~ October 12, 2012 3:15 pm – 4:30 pm F-2 CONCURRENT SESSIONS F (continued) Room Location Michelangelo The Impact of Reform on a Middle and High School Undergoing Significant Re-Design and Identified as School Improvement Grant (SIG) Schools: Success, Struggles, and, Impact on ELL Learners This session will highlight how School Improvement Grants (SIG) have supported a middle and high school that partnered with the Teacher’s Federation in redesign. When identified as SIG schools by the Public Education Department the schools were poised to mobilize the grant to increase student achievement of ELL learners in a large urban district. Experienced principals (new to their schools) have collaborated with the district and teachers to transform professional practices. Strategies for supporting rigorous classroom instruction, promoting teacher leadership effectiveness, and achievement data will be shared. Participants will engage in discussion to apply lessons learned to support their own school/district. Agenda Presented by: Jacqueline Costales, Principal Support Specialist Yvonne Garcia, Principal, Rio Grande High School James Lujan, Principal, Ernie Pyle Middle School Albuquerque Public Schools Albuquerque, NM F-3 Escorial Balanced Scorecard: A Balanced Approach to Measure School Success Irving ISD has deployed a balanced scorecard system that provides dashboard views of progress to all stakeholder groups in the district and allows the public new insight into the district. During this session, participants will learn about Irving ISD’s vision of setting goals and the process used for determining metrics for measuring progress as well as how the district staff and board members have worked together to put those in place. Through real-life examples, participants will learn how the district is informing the community of its progress through interactive touch screens that can be accessed by the community. Bedden, Superintendent Melody Paschall, Associate Superintendent of Academic Services Dr. Alice Owen, Division Director of Technology Irving ISD Irving, TX F-4 Closing the Achievement Gap with College Readiness for All Students Alhambra The role of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in successfully preparing Latino students for college has been documented for 30+ years. In this interactive presentation, the presenters will briefly describe data on the AVID system, including the college entrance requirement rates of Latino students. Presenters will also discuss research finding on the relationship of AVID support and AP test taking on the academic achievement of Latino students. In addition, the presentation will explain the new AVID initiatives designed to help improve Latino and English language learner students’ educational achievement.
