Students at the Southwest Early College High School in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District in Texas take a break from studies in the media center. The district has converted an existing traditional school into the ECHS this school year because it had many at-risk students, with about 90 percent economically disadvantaged and approximately 70 percent coming from homes where Spanish is spoken.
An English teacher at Hidalgo Early College High School in Texas leads students through advanced literacy concepts commonly used to analyze texts in college English courses. Hidalgo teachers have collaborated with partner colleges to ensure students learn what professors expect.
