THE CHALLENGES: acknowledges that Historically Black Colleges & Universities make a signiﬁcant commitment to society by providing access to education to many young adults, regardless of race. It is our goal and objective to help as many students as possible achieve their dream of higher education. Making the transition to college can be diﬃcult. Through a partnership with the Harrisburg, PA Camp Curtin YMCA’s Black Achievers Program, AES is creating promising opportunities for today’s youth. The Black Achievers Program connects students with advisors, role models, career counselors and instructors who care about their success. AES provides students with a chance to see what college is like and to gain extra skills they will need to make the most of their college experience. The partnership oﬀers a variety of pre-college learning experiences designed for student’s grades 9 through 12. These programs help students gain skills, college awareness, and the conﬁdence that can put them on a path to personal, educational and career achievement. In order to attend such tours students are responsible for paying their own way. Prices can range from $250.00 to $1000.00. In addition, the cost associated with a college tour only includes transportation and lodging. Therefore, students and families are responsible for providing their own meals, which adds to the overall cost of these events. AES provides ﬁnancial support to Camp Curtin YMCA that helps oﬀset some of these costs, as well as provides each student with an array of materials that will help increase their ﬁnancial literacy/awareness as well as the overall college preparation process. “The Black Achievers Program is successful because of three major factors: the youth who participate in the programs, the adult volunteers who work in the program and the parents who all want the best for the youth. These factors are surrounded by the ﬁnancial and other resources provided by community partners such as AES.” - JOE SUMMERS Camp Curtin Black Achievers Program Director THE RESULT: As a result of this successful relationship, our combined eﬀorts have helped students oﬀset some of the costs associated with these tours, grown interest in the tours from just a handful of students to nearly ﬁfty annually, and opened the door to enrollment and attendance at HBCUs for dozens of Camp Curtain Black Achievers participants. THE PURPOSE: The purpose of the Camp Curtain Black Achievers is to introduce high school students to Historically Black Colleges and Universities college campus life and to acquaint students with curriculum information, entrance requirements, and ﬁnancial aid sources. In addition, this tour helps students familiarize themselves with the academic and career programs oﬀered by the many colleges and universities they will be visiting. Choosing a college that is right for them can be one of the most important decisions a student can make.
